Grapes: don't gather all; Nel's jam; From =; Gingko leaf; But men; PicNICKery; That cows may drink

I have again lately seen the coons emerge from the grate
at our corner, as has my wife; we know the desolation
Of having our grapes stolen from our vines;
(from WHILE THE CITY SLEEPS)

Don't Gather All the Grapes

Kenneth L. Samuel

And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard,

neither shalt thou gather every grape of thy vineyard;

thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger:

I am the Lord your God.

- Leviticus 19:10 -

These days, there is a certain tyranny that accompanies utmost efficiency and accountability.  When every single seat on every single flight is booked, those on standby are always left stranded.  When every slice of bread is sold to those who can buy it, those who can't afford it are left wanting.  When every minute of the day is planned and prescribed, there is no time for unexpected interventions of the Holy Spirit.

Have you ever decided to attend an event at the very last minute, but it was so well-planned and executed that when you arrived there was not an empty seat to be found?  Then, suddenly, you spot just one.  You rush over and timidly ask the person seated next to it, "Is anyone sitting here?"  The person smiles and says: "Yes, someone is sitting there.  You are."  And if the person is extra kind, she might add, "We reserved this seat just for you."

In our concerns over balanced budgets and fiscal accountability, how well are we planning to accommodate those who just arrived in our midst; those, who for countless reasons didn't feel welcomed until very recently; or those whose names were for so long either omitted or deleted from the invitation list; or those who got lost and just made it in?

In the book of Leviticus, God's call for holiness among God's people was a call for compassion to strangers and generosity to the poor.  So important was this principle of holiness that God did not leave it up to individuals to come up with their own notions of what compassion and generosity in society meant.  God's instructions were clear: generosity and compassion were to be built into the system of reaping and harvesting.  Grapes and grain were to be intentionally left behind, and that which was left behind was not considered waste or entitlement.  It was really a divine reservation for the poor and the unexpected stranger.

How prepared are we today to accommodate the strangers, the poor, and those in desperate need whom God sends along our paths?  Someone is standing and looking for a seat.  Is there room near you?

Prayer

Dear God we thank you for not leaving generosity and compassion up to chance.  Thank you for reserving a place for all of us who missed the first invitation by circumstance or neglect, for those of us who have just arrived.  Amen.

Nel's blackberry jam

(to raccoon news)

Here are the promised toothsome treats.

The blackberries were harvested down by our creek
And the resulting jams are my first stirrings
In such endeavors.

I was quite please with the results
Am itching to try huckleberries
I picked a quart earlier in the year
And made a pie that was quite tasty

Huckleberries are challenging
Because it takes so many
To make anything

I worked over an hour to pick
A single quart
Tiny little things but
They pack a lot of flavor…..

Being But Men

Being but men, we walked into the trees
Afraid, letting our syllables be soft
For fear of waking the rooks,
For fear of coming
Noiselessly into a world of wings and cries.

If we were children we might climb,
Catch the rooks sleeping, and break no twig,
And, after the soft ascent,
Thrust out our heads above the branches
To wonder at the unfailing stars.

Out of confusion, as the way is,
And the wonder, that man knows,
Out of the chaos would come bliss.

That, then, is loveliness, we said,
Children in wonder watching the stars,
Is the aim and the end.

Being but men, we walked into the trees.

ANNUAL CHURCH PICNIC

Yields likenesses, scenes:

By the calendar the appointed day
but rue-inous weather.....the good folks of the
1st Congregational UCC gathered in leaden-lidded
Elysian fields in temps in the 50s at the Glasenapp
Ranch in Dousman WI.  Purpose:  TO PICNIC

Two hawks were seen hunting pr(a)ey overhead,

as Rev. Brittany  -with her son Julius - led the service.

The crowd clustered together in their traditional home-brought
folding chairs and warm jackets if they had been wise and dressed
for the chill.

As the picnic progressed shivering merriment obtained.  Some
heat-seeking missive types sought the remove of the wood fire
where the cooking of childens' hot dogs and s'mores went on.
These people willingly sacrificed their garments
to wood smoke in favor of the heat being radiated.

John T. adopts inscrutable gaze.  Part Japanese.

His wife tries to remember something just on the tip of her tongue.

As brownie eater consumes, Ron casts mirthless expression.  Allegedly has wry sense of humor.

The Brunster smiles through a fright-wig.
She is not scorned, but is acquainted with grief.
Her portfolio includes that.

William pets elderly dog taking refuge with the Glasenapps.  Adopted. At the time we did not have
the story on the shivering dog but he seemed wedded to a position under the fire-pit bench.

Later we learned that Cleo G., our hostess, heated a big towel in the micro-wave
and wrapped the dog, named Annie, to warm her after everybody went home.

Carol, a new member is learning the many personalities of the Congo.  Upbeat, she stands in front
of upswept pines.

Fire-pit symbolizes the United Church of Christ motto:  'That they all may be one'.

All are welcome!

This is an unofficial summary of this event
and very incomplete.  Many things occurred,
including the preparations of Bill and Cleo,
the lawn mowing, the groaning but festive board
inside the house where attenders assembled
their pot lucky dishes and filed around at
the appointed time, the gay chats happening
here there and E.where, ........lots more,
including the parked antique Buick roadster
of Marge and Mel Stark.

Let us pray:

Watering Trough

Let the end of all bathtubs
be this putting out to pasture
of four Victorian bowlegs
anchored in grasses.

Let all longnecked browsers
come drink from the shallows
while faucets grow rusty
and porcelain yellows.

Where once our nude forebears
soaped up in this vessel
come, cows, and come, horses.
Bring burdock and thistle,

come slaver the scum of
timothy and clover
on the cast-iron lip that
our grandsires climbed over

and let there be always
green water for sipping
that muzzles may enter thoughtful
and rise dripping.

KD - long and lithe lap-cat; Grilling out for Memorial Day; Horseradish havarti; From the SRN archives; Lee time

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYiMJ2bC65A

KD: LONG AND LITHE LAP CAT:

Waukesha 5-25-13:KD is not normally a lap cat, yet
today she made an exception for an unknown reason
and climbed up on Dee's lap while shes was writing
tomorrow's sermon. This Dee was doing due to Rev.
Brittany's being in St. Louis for husband Kevin's
mother's funeral service.

(Rev. Ralph E.B. Schultz was in Florida with his
boys and good friend, Cynthia Pike.)

The Congo swings many ways and in a pinch calls
on someone not ordained but good enough to deliver
The Word.

KD perched comfortably on Dee's lap for about an hour
before it was mandatory for Dee to visit the facilities
and get back to her writing.

Dee delivers the sermon goods at church.
As we're preparing to leave, a
vase of flowers blows off the car
roof. She, also handy with broom, sweeps up
the broken glass.

................

Grilling out and, brother,
GLAD TO BE ALIVE:

Dee and I had a memorable Memorial Day cook-out just as many Americans did, everywhere.  When we divested ourselves of unnecessary trappings in 2010 leaving our home at 517 Arcadian Ave, I gave our Weber kettle cooker to a neighbor who did not have a grill and was glad to receive a free one such as the model we used to have.

This year though, in the true spirit of our country’s holiday weekend pastime, we got a small grill from Sears for $29.99 and fit four small-sized hamburgers on it, out back. Standing outside by the rear  trash collection site at the back of our downtown apartment building – a multiple dumpster area serving several buildings, we guarding the meat AND the cooker until the meat was done and the grill was cooled sufficiently to carry all inside to the elevator. There, we ascended the lift with our booty to our 3rd floor aerie.  Safely within and before we ate, we Michael-waved the burgers to reheat our celebration foast.

There, we breathed fresher air than is found beside the random 0'r-spilling trash receptacles outside, and had ourselves a merry little indoor Memorial Day.

We hope your backyard cookouts were as enjoyable as ours, but we tend to doubt it.

May God bless us, every one! Ranging from the poor to the out-of-town junketeers, the Up-north-ern 2nd home open-uppers and etc.

PS:  This tale is similar to our cat testicle ode.
IE:  might not be true.....

Dusk gathers on Memorial Day. KD sits on the
sill next to the eternal flame, studying the
little American flag given us once by an officer
of the State Bank. Our branch, the main downtown
office, is just behind the unlit windows of the
Clarke Hotel across the street.

EVERTHANG'S UP TO DATE IN (WAUKESHA) CITY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9vqL69gm1Y

EVERYTHING'S UP TO DATE IN KANSAS CITY From the stage show "Oklahoma" (Richard Rodgers / Oscar Hammerstein II) Will Parker & Chorus I went to Kansas City on a Friday By Saturday I learned a thing or two But up 'till then I didn't have an idea Of what the mod'rn world was comin' to. I counted twenty gas buggies goin' by theirselves Almost every time I took a walk An' then I put my ear to a bell telephone An' a strange woman started into talk. What next! What next? Everything's up to date in Kansas City They gone about as fer as they can go They went an' built a skyscraper seven stories high About as high as a buildin' orta grow. Everything's like a dream in Kansas City It's better than a magic lantern show. You can turn the radiator on whenever you want some heat With every kind of comfort every house is all complete. You could walk the privees in the rain and never wet your feet! They've gone about as fer as they can go. They've gone about as fer as they can go! Everything's up to date in Kansas City They've gone about as fer as they can go They got a big theatre they call a burleque For fifty cents you could see a dandy show! One of the gals is fat and pink and pretty As round above as she was round below I could swear that she was padded from her shoulder to her heel But then she started dancin' and her dancin' made me feel That every single thing she had was absolutely real! She went about as fer as she could go Yes, Sir! She went about as fer as she could go!

a small piece of horseradish cheese awaits:

I have written
about cheeses:

Last Saturday I visited the Farmers market
Here in Waukesha
And after careful thought invested in
A block of Horseradish havarti.
I now bring it up here to the loft
With the wood block wire cheese cutter
- A favorite tool –

And cheese it while at work.

At first we feared this particular cheese
Was going to burn our nostrils a few
Moments after ingestion;
it did sneak up on us
It is a real and present danger

But it is not too hot for me
Because my olden time-affected
sensory tissues require big
jolts

Dee will not try it again
But I plan to subsume this expense, and

next time at the Brodhead WI
Decatur Dairy cheese stand
I will get what I went for last Saturday:
more Caraway  havarti.
Caraway!  caraway!
(Mild;
reminiscent of sauer kraut)

kitten thinks of nothing

kitten thinks of nothing but murder all day
Cat-Ass-Trophy

How many times must one say no
To a cat begging to go out
After hours

My reckoning of how many
Times I’ve leaned down to advise her
Sours

My disposition; for heaven’s sake
Do you want to hear those mighty descending wings
From the nocturnal sky? She glowers,

Having no imagination, I guess
And continues her pitiful begging to go out
And take her chances during the darkened hours

An owl will, believe me, WILL swoop down
And pick you, you tasty morsel, as if
You were nothing heftier than one of our flowers

Growing outside the door, in whose midst you slink and creep.
These owls are big with talons sinking deep,
They’ll carry you to a treetop; disembowelers

These owls are; your nemeses;
You don’t want to find yourself with great ease flying upward
By surprise, my pussy, to be sliced, diced, and devoured!

Like talking to a catter -wall;
At night a different creature;
She persists! “ Mee-ow, Mee-OW, MEE-OW!” Hers

To learn the hard beak way, but not on this watch!
Her bones and parts shant be reduced to pellets, trophies
Dropped under the Tamarack’s peacable bowers!

No is NO, my furry friend, reckon thyself lucky;
Yea, and compose and confine thyself;
Not to be an owl’s, your howls and bowels are ours!

Odd Fellow Walt Lohman marches in Waukesha Memorial Day parade; Giraffes diving; Funny Times; Selected shorts subject; Jack and Dee converse, etc.; More silver spoon; KD and the fossil

Walt Lohman marched: at the Waukesha Memorial Day parade, in the Knights
Templar color guard a few years ago.  Walt, personal friend and former lodge
brother (Knights of Pythias Juneau Lodge 21), is a fraternal order multi-member,
belonging to the Masonic Lodge 37 of Waukesha, Knights Templar, and is most
savorally known to the Raccoon as a bonefide ODD FELLOW.
He's the be-feathered man on the right.

Brotherhood men like these are endangered species in today's society......

The recently late Jack Mathie and Dee Dix
converse at Duffy Bruning's 90th birthday
celebration, last year.  Topic:  Jack's bout with heart trouble
from which he'd recovered.  Playing golf again.

5-22-13 Entry:  Jack's funeral.  A beautiful rite officiated by
Rev. Brittany Barber at the 1st Congregational UCC Church.  I snapped
the above photo from the many photos mounted on several easels. I like
the way the LC cell cam lens takes ethereal-looking pictures sometimes.

Jack had taken to coming back to the Congo this last year.  He had a period
of rest from the church to which his late wife was so devoted, but we've had a
great year with him.  It was always a delight to see him walking in the door.
He had served the church in so many positions in the past, including Moderator.
This year he once again did a time-honored stint as ticket-taker at the annual
Pancake Supper. See below.

Jack, more than anybody, recently encouraged a current new attender, Phyllis.
She showed up as a stranger one Sunday not long ago and chose a
random pew next to Jack.  He befriended her immediately, making her feel
welcome, and she's since been coming back.  She was at the funeral last evening.

This befriending of strangers was characteristic of Jack.

Jack takes tickets at the recent pancake supper with longtime compatriate, Sid Estenik.

Last week a silver spoon
was featured, from Cedar Falls, IA
our birthplace.

Being at Jack's funeral last night brought
to mind the lyrics from the old Dixieland tune,
St James Infirmary.
Excerpt:

Now, when I die, bury me in my straight-leg britches,
Put on a box-back coat and a stetson hat,
~Put a twenty-dollar gold piece on my watch chain,
So you can let all the boys know I died standing pat.~

More lyrics: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/c/cab_calloway/

I was thinking:  When I go they can put my silver spoon in my mouth
so my friends will know I died standing pat.  ("He may not have been born with
one in his mouth, but he went out with one......")
