The pattern on a Hawaiian shirt?

No,

a stem of backyard tiger lilies placed in a small vase. The first tiger lilies of the year to blossom, and there will be many more, many days-worth in total among the crowded populace.

Each day, of all the buds on a single stem, only one will open to the sun. Today, the third blossom opens, on the third day. There are a finite number of ripening blooms in progress, and when they are successively bloomed the stem is dead.

The SR News wanted to get as close to this phenomenon as we could. Outside the limits of our (only) 2 pixel camera we set the tripod at a too-near distance for the focal range.

We wanted to see it clearly.........
