a good old bridge, said it before, say it again

Sooted, Rooted, Good

In 1849, before the Civil War
The hanging bridge became
Part of the National Road
To walk it now takes guts
Though the daily perambulators
Do so without a thought

The masonry of the two river-edge
Columns
Has held all these years
Supporting the less durable but
Thick as giant’s wrists
Cables
- Woven -
More wind-resistant

Like the web of the cleverest
And most determined spider, or
Several spiders, as it (they) were
Who were serious goal-achievers
Bent on hanging

Any-which way to
Get something or
Somewhere

The old bridge
Nearly cocoons its
Passing cars gone from
Horse-drawn wagons
And buggies
There the spiders' ears prick up

But it is catch and release
form
And Island- or Wheeling-bound
Everything is let go
